Yet Ciara comes across more as a follower than as a leader on this album. Her singing is tersely percussive on songs like вЂњGimme Dat,вЂќ while itвЂ™s sustained and caressing in вЂњI Run ItвЂќ and вЂњYou Can Get It.вЂќ вЂњSpeechlessвЂќ never deviates from an underlying two-bar, three-chord vamp, but its synthetic orchestrations vary unpredictably while CiaraвЂ™s voice curls around the repeating chords on multiple paths. The songs pulse with a twitchy minimalism.

Also, it includes a spot-on roll call of 2010 hip-hop: the heavyweight champion Rick Ross on вЂњLiving Better NowвЂќ (which includes a gratuitous hook sampled from the Notorious B.I.G.) the breakthrough star Wiz Khalifa on the title track and Drake, the crossover Casanova, on вЂњFall for Your Type.вЂќ On вЂњWinnerвЂќ thereвЂ™s even some of the pseudo rapping that Justin Timberlake has been squeezing out of his system of late. Foxx can hire the best producers, though, and this albumвЂ™s digital, dance-oriented R&B isnвЂ™t a far cry from вЂњLast Train to Paris,вЂќ the recent album by Diddy-Dirty Money.

Throughout are oodles of almost-right sonic reproductions of the sort made for film and TV by hired guns when the soundtrack calls for вЂњparty R&BвЂќ or вЂњSouthern bounce.вЂќ Mr.

(His last two albums have been certified platinum.) Even more so than its predecessors, вЂњBest NightвЂќ is a reasonable facsimile of the genre around him, and a deeply satisfying one at that: itвЂ™s Mr. вЂњBest Night of My LifeвЂќ is his fourth album, which might say as much about his appetite to play the game as about his popularity.

In music, though, he plays a naГЇf: eager second stringer, shameless trend chaser, just happy to be allowed on the field. On film, Jamie Foxx is a performer of wide range, a gifted mimic and an Oscar winner.
